I've always been a sportsman of some description.
I started playing soccer when I was around 9 years old and
played, on and off, until I was in my late 30's. I fracture
dislocated my shoulder and never returned. I studied Judo
from the age of 12. I start and stop as my interest in it
varies. I currently have a brown belt and if the body holds
up I'd like to get my black belt (Dan) one day. I do have
medical reasons for not doing it at this stage but they may
improve...
I did a bit of swimming as a kid. Never trained and was
never terribly good but amazingly managed a couple of state
titles in Royal Life Saving. Much preferred surfing which I
did for a full 9 months after leaving school. Loving the
ocean led me to diving and we've been lucky enough to dive
all around the world. Cayman Islands, Fiji, New Guinea,
Micronesia, the Barrier Reef - you name it, we've probably
dived there. Made a bit of a name for myself when I won the
Underwater Photographer of the Year award in 1986.
Have also dabbled in tennis (World Master's 2002), first
division touch football, indoor cricket and z-grade
basketball (which was responsible for my knee
reconstruction in 1993). A tip - don't play basketball.
My current sport of choice is triathlon. This is quite the
change for me as I've never been any sort of endurance
athlete. Did my first tri at age 48 with basically no
'base'. Learning to swim, bike and run is challenging but
fun - you should try it. In December 2009 I completed my
first Ironman triathlon in Busselton, WA - 3.8k swim,
180.2k bike and 42.2k run.
